Renshi Charlie Dean has started private classes at his new dojo in Montgomery, TX. He has named his dojo, "Kodo-kan Dojo", which means, "Home of the Ancient Ways". BACKGOUND Renshi Dean began his training in the fighting arts with boxing when he was 5 years old. He continued to train in boxing until the age of 12 when he began taking lessons in Shotokan Karate from Sensei Haliburton at Japan Ways in Bellaire, Texas. In 1973, Renshi Dean began studying Shorin-Ryu Karate under Kyoshi Mike Arnold. During this time, Renshi Dean also made annual trips to San Francisco, to train with Sensei Sid Campbell, the first American to open a Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan dojo in the United States under the authority of Hanshi Shugoro Nakazato. In 1992, Renshi Dean travelled to Okinawa to train with Hanshi Nakazato and he also began training under Kyoshi Doug Perry of Flat Rock, North Carolina. Renshi Dean also studies Okinawan White Crane with Hanshi Ron Lindsey of Bastrop, TX and he has actively practiced and taught Yang Style Tai Chi since 1992. Renshi Dean's goal is to advance the training level of all martial artists past the basic concepts of block-counter karate, and to help them explore a deeper understanding of kata and applications. Renshi Dean is a highly skilled martial artist, and I consider it an honor to have access to his knowledge and experience.
